What is Love?
Love is patient
but it is not a doormat.
Love is kind
but it doesn’t enable harmful behavior.
Love keeps no record of wrongs
but love recognizes bad patterns
and circular conversations
and dangerous habits
so that the painful patterns can be interrupted.
Love rejoices with the truth
even the really difficult truth
the mental illness truth
the medication and therapy truth
the put on your own oxygen mask first truth
and love is vigilant.
Love has had enough of skirting around
the Issue
tight-lipped and heart beating a little too fast.
Love always protects
its children
with ferocity.
Love protects its marriage
determined as a soldier
eyes fixed on the horizon
far past the troubling statistics.
it can’t even see them
for it chooses not to look.
Love protects its own heart, too
because didn’t Jesus make this heart?
Love always trusts
but love knows that depression is a snake
and snakes are liars.
Love always hopes
because there is always
hope
to be found
when you look for it.
Love always perseveres
because love is worth persevering for
and so
are
you.
