How Mental Illness Affects Relationships?

Hi, I’m Angela, I have a husband with bipolar 2 disorder, my kids have ADHD, and I myself have struggled with depression—YOU’RE NOT ALONE!

This week’s mental health tips are about how mental illness affects relationships.

Why should we care about the mental health of the people we love and interact with? In the United States, almost half of adults will experience a mental illness in their lifetime, the other half still need to care for their mental health.

Let me slow that down for a second:

Almost half of adults will experience mental illness in their lifetime. We all know someone or are that someone who could be struggling at any given moment. Having a mental illness—even if we share the same mental illness—is as unique as the individual who experiences it. But there are some common ways that it impacts us:

When we look at mental health we can break it down to….

  1. Emotional
  2. Psychological
  3. Social Well-being

It affects how we…

  1. Think
  2. Act
  3. Feel
  4. How we handle stress
  5. How we relate to others

If we want to have relationships that are loving and safe then we need to address mental health in a way that will help acknowledge the impact of mental illness and educate ourselves in empowering ways so that we can learn how to process our emotions, have healthy boundaries, and learn to collaborate with those we love.

Remember what it says in 1 Corinthians 13:13

Scripture:

And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NIV)
