3 Tips When Your Loved One Has a Mental Illness

Today we’re gonna talk about 3 Tips When Your Loved One Has a Mental Illness

First I want to acknowledge how difficult this is if you’ve just found out about this diagnosis. But there are things you can do to make life better for you and your loved one.

#1: Educate yourself.

So many resources. Go to dr. apts. Read books recommended by health professionals. I’ve even read medical journals with a dictionary by my side so get the latest information and mediation and other treatments. No one cares for them as much as you do so making sure you’re educated makes a difference.

#2: Take care of yourself.

#3: Advocate for your loved one.

12 years ago my husband received his official diagnosis with bipolar 2 disorder and over those 12 years…

  • I have fired a psychiatrist.
  • Researched counselors to find the best fit for him.
  • And advocated with our insurance company to get him the medication he needed when they wanted to deny the claim. And I Won!

I’m not afraid of being a bull dog. This is his life I’m fighting for.

I never had to be rude but I did have to have accurate information and be persistent. You know them better than anyone so be confident.

What tips would you give to someone who just found out their loved one has a mental illness? I’d love to hear it in the comments below.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Matthew 12:30-31
