Wise Words Bring Healing—2 Powerful Steps to Erase Negativity Now
Proverbs 12:18 states that wise words heal. What do you need healed? A broken heart? A broken spirit? A broken relationship? A broken home?
Words contain power. They contain energy. Spoken words reveal the condition of our hearts, and they carry life, or death. Proverbs 18:21 says that “death and life are in the power of the tongue”. Are you daily speaking words of life over yourself, your family, and your circumstances? Or are you talking about your present situation, your difficulties, your lack, and your disappointments? Whatever you are speaking about on a regular basis is going to increase. If you don’t like your current situation, stop rehearsing it, and start creating something new. God has given us the free will, and we can choose words of life.
Step 1: Awareness
A positive change can’t take place without clarity around that which is happening now. Awareness is the key to making any significant shift. Step one is to begin today by paying attention to what you are saying to yourself in your own head. What ideas repeat? Do you hear…
I can’t do this!
I don’t know enough.
There’s no time.
I’m too stressed!
I’m not good enough, smart enough, talent enough.
Be brave enough to face the words and phrases that capture your thinking so you can take the next step and stop allowing these powerful, negative words to influence your life.
Step 2: Erase and Replace
Once you are aware of the phrases that continue to play over and over in your mind, you have the power to change the programming. Imagine an eraser in your mind. When you hear the negative, dis-empowering statements, erase them. Say to yourself: “ERASE!” and imagine erasing them from your thinking. Immediately, replace the statement with its opposite.
Let’s take an example. You make a mistake at your job. Immediately you hear in your head, “You are so stupid. You should have known better than to make a mistake like that!”
ERASE! Say, instead, “God has given me a sound mind. (2Tim 1:7) I can learn whatever I need to learn to do a better job next time.” And then go on.
When more defeating thoughts try to capture your attention (and your emotions), repeat the process. Say ERASE! Then flip the thought to its opposite and feel the empowerment that follows. Don’t be alarmed or ashamed if you have to do this all day long! The key is to not give up. Eventually, the phrases that repeat will be powerful and healing.
Speaking negatively about ourselves, and others, is a habit. And habits can be changed if we are willing to submit our thoughts to God, and renew our minds.
Scripture:
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 (NIV)
